What the Heck? - 1 Cor. 10:13

"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." - 1 Corinthians 10:13

I'm sure that in some point in your life, someone has misquoted this verse to you - they've said in the midst of pain or tragedy in your life that "God will never give you more than you can handle." Let me tell you, there in no where in the Bible where it says that. Not even a little bit.

I think of the mother who has lost a child, and how horribly tragic it is that they undoubtedly are misquoted this verse in the midst of their sorrow. I look deep into my own heart, and know for a matter of fact that losing one of my daughters would undoubtedly be more than I could possibly handle - no question about it. There are other griefs that plague our souls  - heck, the state of our world today is a grief that weighs so heavily that at times it feel suffocating. God didn't magically transform us into indestructible creatures that can withstand all manner of horrible situations simply because we are Christians.

What the verse ACTUALLY says is that no temptation will be more than you can bear - not grief, or pain, or suffering. TEMPTATION.

When I realized this, it was like a lightbulb turned on over my head. The guilt of wondering why my faith wasn't strong enough to bear the injustice and grief in my life was suddenly gone. My griefs and pain may be more than I can bear, but never more than what HE can bear.

Temptation is a horse of a different color - we make excuses for our temptations and bad habits, and give in because we "can't help it". This verse clearly states that it's not true!! There's no temptation in your life that you cannot overcome, and when you feel tempted, He will always give you a way out. Choose to seek His face in moments of temptation!

And the next time someone misquotes this verse to you in times of struggle, just thank them kindly but remember that you aren't a failure because you hurt - but also remember that God is bigger than all brokenness, and is the great physician who can heal all manner of brokenness in our lives! Lean on Him - the God who has never left even in times of duress. He is strong enough to carry you through the darkest storms, and will be faithful through them.
